Planting a greener future by increasing urban tree canopies and native plant habitats

The Power of Green Infrastructure

Urban greening initiatives not only enhance the quality of life in cities but also foster resilience in the face of climate challenges.

  • City tree canopies help mitigate the urban heat island effect by providing shade and reducing surface temperatures, leading to improved air quality and reduced energy consumption.

  • Trees also contribute to healthy soil quality and stormwater management by absorbing and filtering rainwater.

  • Increased native plant habitats enhance biodiversity, supporting local pollinators and the regional ecosystem.

  • Green spaces impact the physical and mental well being of communities by strengthening social ties and activities among residents.

Branch Out Fort Bragg

Conservation Works is establishing a foundation for long term urban canopy development in the coastal town of Fort Bragg. Tree planting is a key resiliency-based action that all individuals can take to help combat climate change and by combining the strength of community interest with city policy we can mitigate existing ‘tree deserts’ within the city.

With support from the Environmental Grant Program of the Community Foundation of Mendocino County, the Conservation Works team has planted native trees and shrubs in underserved neighborhoods with the lowest tree canopy density.

Mitigating Tree Deserts

Tree equity in urban forestry refers to the fair distribution of trees and green spaces within urban areas, ensuring that all communities, regardless of socioeconomic status or demographic composition, have access to the numerous benefits that trees provide. This concept acknowledges the disparities often seen in urban environments, where affluent neighborhoods tend to have more trees and better-maintained green spaces compared to lower-income or marginalized communities.

Conservation Works is utilizing data driven tools, such as those available at Tree Equity Score, along with on-site field assessments to select underserved neighborhoods for Branch Out tree plantings. Our collaborative efforts with community members, the City of Fort Bragg, and local nurseries will lay the foundation for ongoing coastal urban greening projects and tree canopy development.
